Definitely, no it is not normal nor is it good.

Any joint pain is a symptom of something not going right. Muscle pain is more or less a sign you are working the muscle, but actual joint pain isn’t good.

To insure good running form, be sure you have quality running shoes. In addition, you may find it worthwhile to invest in an Ace Brand neoprene wrap. I wear them and they’ve provided my knees a good support base.

You may want to have someone watch you run and check out your style. You may be hunched over, overstriding, or coming down too hard. Usually, treadmills are the easiest surface to run on, so this is a bit unusual.

I’d certainly keep your running to a minimum until you overcome this. If you persist, you are likely going to worsen the injury.

I wouldn’t call it normal, but I would call it a probability, if you are at least 10 lbs or more over you standard weight limit for your height. Also, if you have arthritis, or some past knee injury, these could also be aggravated by starting a running program. A flexible elastic knee brace may help give support while running, thereby reducing stress or pain.
