What is causing a pain in the chest when my 12yr son swallows?

My 12 yr old son started a “conditioning class” with weights and such. From the day he started, he began complaining about a pain in his chest. It seems like it was a pulled/strained muscle at first. But he says it doesn’t hurt when I push on his chest. He says it hurts just when he swallows. The pain (kinda burning he says) starts just below his ****** bone then travels up. Could this be acid reflux?

I’m thinking of calling the doctor or am I over reacting?

A check up is the right idea, since who knows what it really is, but it does sound like acid reflux.

go to the doctor. they know the body better than we do and can assist better since they can actually look at your son. good luck.

Could he have strained something..?? Since he is 12 years old and not an adult (where an adult can determine if we need a doctor or not) You should go ahead and make that doctor appt. You need to be sure theres no underlying problems.

If you call me I’ll tell you than no, you are not over-reacting. That sort of pain is not unusual in someone who’s just started a program of weight conditioning, but your son’s seems different in a couple of respects. I would ask you to bring him to the clinic for a closer look. Most likely it’s nothing serious, but there are some potentially serious possibilities. I’d say call your physician - better safe than sorry - ’cause no matter how good we are, we can’t always fix sorry.

It could be acid reflux. I drink 8oz of water mixed with 2 tbsp of apple cider vinager and it is gonzo. Been reflux free for years.

It sould also be a condition called costo-condritis (sp?) an inflamation of the tissue that connects the sternum to the ribs. I aggravated that while doing dips/bench and it felt like a heart attack when inflammed. I had to get steriod shots in the chest to reduce the swelling, cut back on the weight and have been OK since. Scared the beegeeze outta me though.

Please ask your son not touch any weight till he is 16,he has to be strictly on free hand exercise till then, otherwise the natural growth will get hampered.Food habits are equally important till then,he should take his food at least four times in a day(not junk food).
You are not over reacting but I think he has got a muscle pain located at the upper chest near the arm pit.Check it.

It could be acid reflux, or pectoralis strain/sprain or possibly exercise induced asthma. I’d take him to the doctor just to make sure. Best of luck to you!
