What could a sharp pain starting in the groin and traveling down to the knee be?

When there is pain, I can’t stand on my leg. After sitting for a few minutes I am fine like nothing has happened. The pain came and went several times during the day. X-rays show nothing in the bone and the doctor says it’s not vein.
