What does a nurse practitioner do at pain management?

I have my monthly appt at my pain management doctor in a couple weeks and they had to change it with the nurse practitioner because the doctor won’t be there that day. Do they do the same thing your doctor does? Will they be able to prescribe more medicine if you need it? Will it be a wasted trip there?

That depends on the nurse practitioner… She ultimately will be the one reviewing the chart again, and deciding on the appropriate care for you. Chances are the only reason she would change the prescription is if she suspects abuse of some sort…

Well they can do all the same things but they can not write prescriptions for controlled substances like most pain meds are.. so if thats what your after then reschedule..but i hope not

They can prescribe medication. I’m not sure about stage 2 narcotics and above but she’ll be able to see how you are doing and then when your doctor comes back in the office the next day he’ll write you those rx and you can come get them or they’ll call them in. It’s not a wasted trip pursay. I don’t like seeing anyone but my doctor. Can’t you just call in for more refills?

They can write a prescription. At my pain management doctor that is all I saw for six months and I wasn’t getting any better and I requested that I see the doctor or I was contacting my insurance company, they were charging as seeing the doctor..the pay is less when they see nurse practitioner.

An NP can write any prescription a Dr. can write, unlike what blondey wrote. They are under the “supervision” of the docs in the office which is what allows them to treat patients and write the scripts. If the NP determines that you need to have the narcotics, she will write them for you.
