How effective is gas for pain relief?

pain relief
Skye asked:

I’ve decided I want to try giving birth without drugs, or at the very least just gas. I don’t have my whole heart set on it and I realise I may change my mind when the time actually comes. My question is how effective is just gas for pain relief? I’ve heard it can make you feel a bit dizzy and out of it but is it actually any good for helping to manage pain?

I found it made me feel really sick and dizzy. It did distract me from the pain a bit but only because I felt so damn bad, like I was on another planet, but not a good one! lol! I personally would not use it again.

I was 7cm when got to the hospital and 8 cm when they broke my waters so gas was my only option!!

I thought it was great did not make me feel sick or dizzy but did help just for that final pushing stage!

I did not want any pain relief and found walking was the best ever also stay at home as long as possible

i didnt think it helped with the pain as such but it was a great distraction, yes you feel dizzy and lightheaded but thats the distraction…. it cant hurt and yes you will more than likely change your mind…

I was like you when I had my forth baby. I wanted to try as long as I could without anything. I relented & had gas, as the pain was getting to intense. I liked the gas, it just took the edge off, but you have to use it before the pain actually hits. I’ve found that having something else to focus on (a picture, or favourite music) helps heaps too. Just go with the contractions, but if you really feel you need help, take it.
    Congratulations & Best wishes.

I had it at the early stages of my labour but was in alot of pain, helped alot but at the late stages of labour i thought it was useless for pain relief but a good distraction. xx

Gas was my only option as it was too late for anything else. I found that it took the edge off of the pain but it made me very sleepy. I had it for about 2 mins and the doctor ended up taking it away from me because he thought I was going to fall asleep.
